Malta to Host the FEGAT World Trotting Championship 2026

Malta will host the FEGAT World Championship for Amateur Drivers for the first time on Sunday, 27 September, with representatives from 12 countries competing at the Malta Equidrome.

The event marks an important milestone for Maltese trotting, four years after Clifferty Calleja won the same championship for Malta in Italy.

More than 100 horses were registered by Maltese owners, with 96 expected to compete across an eight-race programme. Visiting drivers will represent Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden and the United States, while Redent Magro will fly the Maltese flag.

Details were announced during a press conference organised by the Malta Racing Club and EquestriMalta in the presence of Minister for Education and Sport Byron Camilleri.

Minister Camilleri said that hosting a championship of this level reflects the progress achieved within the sector and Malta’s ambition to continue raising the standards of the sport. He also highlighted the contribution of international events to sports tourism, attracting participants, delegations and visitors from different countries.

Malta Racing Club Chairman Anthony Mifsud described the occasion as an honour for Malta following years of work to secure the championship. He thanked the Maltese owners who registered their horses and EquestriMalta for its continued support.

EquestriMalta CEO Max Zammit reaffirmed the entity’s commitment to supporting the sector financially and administratively. In fact EquestriMalta is the championship’s principal sponsor, supporting its logistics, prizes, international delegations and related activities. Malta Equidrome CEO Dr Matthew Brincat invited racing enthusiasts to attend the event and support the Maltese representative.

Redent Magro thanked the organisers, participating owners and all the entities involved for the opportunity to represent Malta, expressing his hope for a competitive championship and another strong result for the country.
